Grid Computing is now available through Academic Technology (AT) who will provide a distributed parallel computing environment for processing large data sets and other complex mathematical problems to help support the research and instructional needs of the University's faculty. Academic Technology's Grid Computing system is based on the United Devices (http://www.ud.com) Grid MP Enterprise distributed computing software, which links together hundreds of AT's computers to create a virtual supercomputer.

Currently, the HMMER application programs are available for use. These applications are designed to do sensitive searching of massive databases using statistical descriptions utilizing the distributed Grid Computing system. Other modeling programs can be installed, written or modified for use in the Grid system.

AT will provide consulting and training services on implementing Grid Computing solutions for instructional and research needs. For more information about Grid Computing, please visit AT's Grid Computing webpage, http://www.at.ufl.edu/grid.
