The morning of April 18, students in the Decision Information Services graduate program at the University of Florida learned about intrusion detection systems from one of their very own distinguished campus security team members.

Jordan Wiens, network security engineer, talked to Dr. Praveen Pathak's graduate students about the history and current technology in IDS. Pathak, who is an assistant professor with the Warrrington College of Business, invited Wiens as a guest speaker for of one of the class's security lectures.

"If you want to go into the security field, you have to know about IDS," said Wiens. "Though the students were already familiar with the topic, I hope my talk gave them more of an appreciation of the large spectrum of intrusion detection technology."

Some of the topics during the talk were about the history of companies that have IDS, general techniques used to avoid evasion, and what new general techniques and counter-techniques are used to evade detection.

The talk was beneficial for both sides, Wiens said. He enjoyed researching and teaching the topic he loves while students were able to learn about additional research and IDS from a first-hand expert. Wiens hopes this relationship will develop into something greater; he'd be pleased to have students do more with the security team in the future such as work on projects and aid professors in awareness.
