CNS completed another round of core router supervisor upgrades this February. All UFL core routers now have the Supervisor 720 modules which support 10GE and advanced features, and have more capacity for core services such as Access Control Lists (ACLs). The next phase of core upgrades will be to add more 10GE ports to central nexus routers which will enable dual 10GE uplinks in additional core routers. The core routers which will receive 10GE the next several months are Aero, CSE, MEB, and Mowry.

These upgrades will add to the list of routers that currently support 10GE: SSRB and Centrex core, SSRB and Centrex Nexus and Internet POP, and the research network. Although none of the current core links are fully utilized, this upgrade allows the campus core network to be ready for the next big jump in traffic levels. Backups across the backbone network continue to be the driving requirement for capacity upgrades although some research does require high speed on the production network as well. The current UFL core network is a partial mesh topology with each of the 10 core routers having a 10Gbps or 1Gbps connection to each of the two "Nexus" routers, one located in SSRB and one located in the Centrex building.
