For the past several months, CNS employed a technique known as greylisting to reduce the amount of junk e-mail ("Spam") delivered to UF mailboxes.

Greylisting was an effective method of interdicting Spam, and the UF community benefitted significantly from its use. However, based on our statistics and estimates regarding our filtering infrastructure, we believe that recent progress in other methods of spam detection and prevention have supplanted our need for greylisting at this time. Therefore, on February 3, 2008, CNS Open Systems Group removed greylisting functionality from smtp.ufl.edu .

The mail filtering systems will be continually monitored for effectiveness in order to determine if greylisting or other spam-fighting tools need to be implemented in the future.

Please direct any questions regarding the disabling of greylisting to open-systems-l@lists.ufl.edu .
