Due to a large increase in peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing and copyright infringement complaints, the UF IT Security Team has implemented an automated notification system that will send e-mail notices to network administrators and WIPA users when P2P traffic is detected.

We understand that legitimate uses for P2P do exist and will create exceptions for those units and users that provide documentation of their usage.

Below are examples of the notifications that will be sent. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at ufirt@ufl.edu.

Sample GatorLink (WIPA) notification:

Peer-to-peer traffic was detected from a UF network connection made using your GatorLink user ID. Although some uses of peer-to-peer applications are legitimate, many are used for obtaining illegal copies of music, movies, games and software.

UF takes copyright violations seriously. Student violators may be submitted to Student Judicial Affairs. Industry groups like the RIAA, MPAA and others representing copyright holders may pursue fines averaging $3000 per violation.

See UF's position on copyright violations at http://infosec.ufl.edu/copyright .

If you think this notification is in error or you have questions, please contact the UF IT Security Team at ufirt@ufl.edu .

Sample Network administrator notification:

Peer-to-peer traffic was detected from IP address(es) below. Although some uses of peer-to-peer applications are legitimate, many are used for obtaining illegal copies of music, movies, games and software. Please investigate to identify the user responsible and determine if their use was legitimate. If not, inform the user's supervisor if staff, or Student Judicial Affairs if a student. Do not attempt to take action against the user yourself unless your are the user's supervisor.
