Office Communications Server (OCS) goes live in July
UF Exchange is adding
Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) for all UF Exchange users. OCS provides a
collection of fully integrated services to the UF Exchange environment:

Presence indicators: Users elect to provide information to other
UF Exchange users regarding their workstation presence. The system
indicates whether or not a user is at their workstation.

Secure, integrated chat: The chat service uses GatorLink
authentication and is fully integrated with UF Exchange.
-
Audio services: During a chat session, users can switch to audio
and conduct voice conversations over their computers without using a
phone.
-
Video services: During a chat session, users can switch to video,
providing desktop video conferencing.
-
Desktop Sharing: During a chat session, users can share their
desktop with others in the chat session supporting collaboration and
workstation support.

are current and in compliance with the university's Oracle contract. Upgrading to version 9.0 allowed for
incorporation of product maintenance fixes, and for UF to remain on the vendor's customer support cycle. There are some
minor changes to the myUFL portal. Read on for these!
Reminder: New CNS Logon Screen (NERVMS, CICS, Admin Menu, TSO)
This is to remind you that on Sunday, June 7th, 2009, people signing on to
mainframe applications (the "NERDC" screen) will see a new CNS log-on
screen that will be similar in looks to the current log-on screen. Expect
to see "CNS" in large letters at the top of the screen, a terminal ID in
the upper right corner, a menu, and a command line. You do not need to
change anything on your computer at this time to see or use the new log-on
screen. However, there are important differences that you should know
about.
UF CNS Establishes VPN Tunnel to State IT Services
Did you ever wonder what a real "can do" central IT service can do for your everyday job? Here's just one example: In
response to efforts by the State to improve security on state government networks, UF CNS, with the help of the
Florida Department of Management Services (DMS), the administrative arm of the State of Florida government, has
implemented a secure site-to-site Virtual Private Network (VPN) for campus access to state IT resources located on
MyFloridaNet.

TPX, Easytrieve & Panvalet to be Removed 08/01/2009
On Saturday, August 1, 2009, TPX, Easytrieve, and Panvalet software products will no longer be available on the CNS
z/OS system.
We first mentioned our intention to remove these products in a September 2008 article in /Update. At that time, we
explained that rising costs had caused us to review our mainframe software to select which items could be discontinued
with minimal impact on our customers. The selected products were TPX, Easytrieve, and Panvalet.

In January 2009, the Phase III expansion of the UF High Performance
Computing (HPC) cluster was completed. The effort to build the coalition
started in early 2007, with planning complete in November of 2007. This
expansion brought the total computing capacity of the HPC cluster to 2,500
cores, which translates to about 10 Tflops (floating point operations per
second).
The Phase III expansion effort was spearheaded with crucial initial
fundraising by the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research
(ICBR) and the Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). The
Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and collaboration and the Open Science Grid
(OSG) collaborated and several faculty in CLAS also made direct
investments.

UF Web Administration has begun the task of updating their Webadmin
site. As part of that process, the office has employed various tools
